Update April 24th, 2014

Duke Farms has opened the gardens; the top soil is still very compacted after bringing in new soil; the prior soil turned out to be contaminated with arsenic and pesticide residues from a long time ago. Roto-tilling has helped a little.

This Sunday 4/27 will be the first real work day for the garden. Come help us make the beds at 3:30 pm: we'll prepare and amend the soil, build the beds and lay the straw for some pathways. Remember to bring your own shovels, rakes etc. and come to Plot 28E at the community gardens at Duke Farms, 1112 Dukes Parkway West in Hillsborough, NJ.

Still Needed

Tomato cages! Please bring those if you have any extras to donate.

About BoroHarvest

BoroHarvest is the name for BoroGreen’s community garden at Duke Farms. Through our community effort, we’re growing organic vegetables to benefit the Hillsborough food bank. The estimated time commitment for a plot of our size is about 4 hours per week, to be shared between all of us. Christoph Ohngemach and Keith Richmond will coordinate.

Different parts of the season will require different kinds of work:
◆ soil amendment, laying out the planting beds, building raised beds
◆ planting season
◆ weeding and watering season
◆ harvest season
Of course, there will be a fair amount of overlap. We'll try to minimize the need for frequent watering by mulching heavily. That will require some muscle power, so volunteers are really needed at the beginning of the season.

BoroGreen is a recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization and consists of a loosely knit community of residents, businesses, congregations and like-minded groups, all contributing to a more sustainable community in and around Hillsborough, NJ.
